new filter installation return is suctioning ??

i managed to install everything but my return is suctioning water and my skimmer is putting water in .. any clue I checked the lines?
okay, do I have this right the return goes to the filter and the skimmer goes to the pump ?
or the return goes to the pool and the skimmer goes to the pump
I'm confused?

Show us some pics and tell us about your pool and equipment.

The suction side of the pump is connected to the skimmer. The pressure side of the pump is connected to the filter.
