My PB has dug the pool and laid down steel and is getting ready to Gunite. Before he does the Gunite I have the following questions:
1. I understand that steel is usually lifted about 3 inches from the ground. He has done this with most of my pool, but I have a 140 square foot Sun Shelf where the Steel is lifted 10 inches above the ground. I am having the water 8 inches deep there, which means he will have to pour 14 inches of Gunite on the Sunshelf (10 inches of which will be below the Steel and 4 inches of which will be above it). It was my understanding (from what I have read) that the steel should be in between the Gunite and am wondering if having the Steel 4 inches below the top and 10 inches above the bottom of the Gunite is problematic. The PB says no, but they have been fixing a lot of mistakes and I'm not sure if they just don't want to be bothered adding dirt to the SunShelf so that the top and bottom of the Gunite would be equidistant from the steel. They plan to pour pretty quickly so please advise.
2. I have a 25 foot ledge on the back of the Pool that will have Rocks on it. They have 1/2 inch REBAR coming up that wall and then bend the steel 90 degrees (for about 10 inches) toward the end of the Pool. But in some places when they bend the steel 90 degrees it doesn't reach all the way to the end of the pool (they are missing about 3 or 4 inches). Should I insist that they tie another piece of REBAR to the pieces that don't go all the way to the end?
3. I am building a Grotto (see attached picture) that will have rocks around it and be about 4 feet high. The PB had stated in correspondence that the "grotto walls would be beefed up with 1/2 inch steel and a double curtain of steel #3 Rebar where it protrudes past the pool elevation". However, the construction plans failed to address this and initially they only put 3/8 REBAR on the Grotto walls and floor and laid it 12 by 12. When I told them it obviously wasn't sufficient, they came back and put some 1/2 inch REBAR across the walls. My first question is: Should the steel coming up the walls and bending 90 degrees toward the wall have been 1/2 inch REBAR and should I make them add more steel there. Also, what did PB mean when he said "double curtain"? And what did he mean when he said "protrudes past the pool elevation"? On the Ledges, they have 1/2 inch REBAR coming up the walls and bending 90 degrees toward the end of the Pool, so I figure they should have done that in the Grotto as well, but welcome any advice.
4. In my Shallow end, they put 3/8 steel 12 by 12 on the Floor and this is what the contract called for. Would it make any sense for me to purchase at Home Depot 18 pieces of 20 feet of 1/2 REBAR and lay them down myself on the shallow end to make it 6 by 6? I'm not very handy but it seems easy enough. Obviously the 12 by 12 in shallow end must pass Code, but any thoughts on whether the additional cost (about $200) would be worth it?
5. After they dug, I told the PB that I thought the portion of the Pool had the wrong depth (it was supposed to be 7 feet at the start of the Grotto). They delayed doing steel the next day and the PB came out and measured and told me it was correct. I wasn't home and before I could check again the next morning they started laying the steel. After they had laid all of the steel on the floor, I had their steel guys measure the depth and it was 6 feet ( not seven feet). So the PB had his guys come back out dig through the steel to get the right depth. Prior to the Steel they had put rocks down on the Pool floor, but when they had to dig through the steel, all the rocks in that location were lost and the pool just had dirt (or mud) there. See attached picture. My question is whether they need to put more rocks down. The Supervisor said no, that the rocks were only there to help the steel guys put the steel down (so they wouldn't be stepping in mud). Is this true, or should the rocks be put down in the spot where they were lost?
