I just opened my pool on Memorial day, due to a mesh cover it a was a total mess as always.:(
Got out most of the "sediment" leaves, worms, and such, still working on getting the rest of the stuff out using the main drain
as much as possible (don't want to vac to waste to much and have to add water, I have a well and being cautious on pump life).
Initial status: 6/2/22:
FC -0
CC - 1.0
PH 7.0
Alka - 60
CYA - 0
Current status 6/6/22 after adding additional LC (obviously over did the LC a bit), added some CYA (got it to 30), and baking soda to raise PH and Alka:
FC - 9.0
CC - 0.5
PH - 7.2
Alka - 80
CYA - 30
Water is clear, still some sediment, dead algae and such (working on vacuum and backwash).

Comments appreciated as to this status as I am Slam(ing) for these past 5 days.

Now that you have made some adjustments, the only thing you need to do is keep the FC at the proper SLAM level of "12" and follow all the steps noted on the SLAM Process page. Be vigilant on that article and also try to be patient as the chlorine does it's thing. You'll get there.

Well 2 days have gone by, shocked the pool again yesterday evening at 5:00 PM, tested at 9:00 Pm Readings:
FC - 7.6
CC - .5
PH - 7.2
Alka - 80
CYA - 30
This morning 9:00 AM test was:
FC - 5.9
CC - 0.5
PH - 7.2
Alka - 80
CYA - 30
Took a sample to Leslie's also, just to see what they came up with -

You need to keep the FC at the proper SLAM level of "12" and follow all the steps noted on the SLAM Process page. Rely on your own testing and follow that page carefully and you will get rid of the algae.

When you say "shocked" the pool, do you mean with powdered shock? Or did you add liquid chlorine?
Going to the pool store will only lead to more confusion - trust your testing and follow the steps.

If you don't attack the SLAM with frequent testing and dosing with liquid chlorine, it'll drag on and on. I'd recommend to get really serious and attack it to maintain the proper levels. If you need a FC of 12 and you're under that, you're just wasting your time.

Thanks for all your help Texas Splash -
I've vacuumed 99% of any dead algae, and small debris as of yesterday. Water is clear, no visible green algae, will vacuum one more time,
then I'm going to clean the filter completely, and start with a new batch of DE, and SLAM to 12 as suggested
will run 24/7 through saturday, maintaining the FC at 12, and see what happens.
Plan Ok?

Liquid shock only, I'm converted and will probably us LC as my go to chlorinating agent.
Would it matter if I have a floater with last years pucks floating around?
I'm guessing that they may still be somewhat viable for chlorine, and at least dosing some CYA, as I'm only at a CYA of 30.

The pucks will only raise your CYA level resulting in the need to increase your SLAM FC level above 12. So I'd take them out.

Keep your FC at 12 by testing and dosing LC as many times per day as possible. Hourly is great if you can. Every time your FC drops below 12 just extends your SLAM a little longer.

Got it, thanks for the heads up.

Well I've been Slamming it since wednesday, with a slight interruption on Thursday for a friends wedding/reception (heh) , but as of friday maintained the Slam as advised.
Yesterday's numbers looked reasonable, dared to do an OCLT, raised FC to 10.0 last night, around 4:pM, checked at 9:00PM, readings below.
Tested this morning @9:00am no sun, clouds, and some light train overnight.
Numbers last night at 9:00 PM:
FC - 10
CC - 0
PH - 7.6
This morning at 9:00 AM:
FC - 9.0
CC - <0.5
PH - 7.6
Alka - 90
CYA - 30 or slightly less (according to test kit limitation)
Water is clear, ran my robot yesterday, all looks good.
I'm thinking of adding a little CYA to get to 30/40, not messing with the PH yet as it's going to rain later today
Any opinions out there appreciated.

Many extend the SLAM one more day after successful OCLT just for insurance.

Go ahead and raise your CYA by 10, wait 24-48 to retest. Better to sneak up on your target.

As for pH, any pH in the 7s is just fine. No need to adjust it until it hits 8. When it does, add Muriatic acid to reduce it back to 7.4. It will rise again.

OK - Looks like success today.
Extended the Slam last night, added LC at 5 PM tested at 9:00PM, FC-10.0 , ran pump overnight (had a hefty thunderstorm overnight),
Tested this morning at 9:00 AM results:
FC - 8.5
CC - 0.5
PH - 7.6
ALKA - 90
CYA - 40 (assume it's risen from the puck floater i had in the pool, removed the floater to stop rise)

Pool is clear, and seems good to go. I will test later in the afternoon to see what the sunlight does to my FC and other chemistry.
I'm assuming I'll be experimenting with balancing the CYA / LC ratios to stay within limits.

As an aside - any guess on how much CYA is usually contained in 3in chlorine pucks (Trichloro-s-trizinetrione),it said 90% available chlorine
1% other ingredients?

Once again appreciate everybody's help.

Poolmath shows: 8oz trichlor adds 5.5 FC, 3.3 CYA.

Going from a 10 to 8.5 overnight is not good, provided you tested after sunset and before sunrise. The rainstorm throws a wrench in the numbers if you have potential for runoff into your pool.

If it were me, I'd continue SLAM with those results.
