Low backwash/ rinse flow

I had a problem with water coming out the backwash when filtering. I replaced my multi port. It seems to be running fine on filter 12 psi. I went to check backwash and I have very little flow. Would a low sand level cause this? I’m going to replace the sand and check my laterals this weekend. Was I supposed to do something about air in the tank after I replaced the port? Help, I need my pool back 😭

Welcome to TFP! Could you post a couple pics of your filter and equipment pad so we can see everything?

I didn’t switch the hoses when I installed the new port like I read in other posts. I wish that was it. 😆 These are all I have at the moment. That’s actually the old port. Everything seemed fine until the water drop overnight and I saw it was coming out my backwash. I just don’t under what would cause low flow on back wash but good pressure on filter. I’m so dreading changing out that sand. Such a pain.

Rats. Okay. I was hoping for a current pic that showed how everything was connected currently. When you say you saw water coming out the backwash, that was after the MPV swap? You did change the entire MPV and not just the spider gasket inside correct?

No, that was before the new one. I solved that problem but now I have this problem. Yes, I installed a whole new port. I detached hoses and removed the collar. Pulled off old port. Lubed the new o-ring and slid the new one on. Reattached hoses just as they were. Could I have lost sand with it running out the backwash?

A little but shouldn't be anything significant or that would explain water leaking to waste.

A new spider gasket comes on the new port, right?
Yes, it should've been all in one assembly.

Well… I was sitting here at work staring at that picture and thinking about my return hose dripping at the pump end when I realized my dripping return is on top. Honestly, I have never been so happy to make such a simple mistake. I ran home on lunch and swapped them in less than 30. Backwash is blasting out now. 🤣
Thank goodness I’m not going to spend an entire Saturday scooping/sucking sand out of that tank.
Now, on the pump inlet original elbow it looks like they used some kind of flex seal. I thought it was just melted plumber’s tape but it must be something else. I used tape but I got a drip from where it threads in. I also have a drip on the return at the hose part. I ordered a new return hose. It’s probably just dried out from the 100° Texas heat and the clamp isn’t getting a good squeeze. It’s been in the heat for 7 years. 😆

Thank you so much for request pictures. It’s the only reason I noticed.
