I fear I will have to replace my pumps this year.

They are old, single speed Hayward 3HP Super Pump II’s.

My pool is ~52k gallons (so in theory I need at least 108gpm) and I have 2” pipes (so in theory I need at most 143gpm).

My pool has 1300-1400 feet of PVC (I am estimating based on14 runs that avg 98 feet) and about 40 90 degree angles in the yard and another 20 in the pump house...

Do I need another 3HP? If I go variable speed does that change anything?

I'll let Mark give you a definitive answer. @mas956
However, a 3HP Pentair Intelliflo should cover all possible bases (I'm not as faniliar with other manufacturers products but the Intelliflo is the go-to VS pump on this forum). You can experiment with lowering the pump's RPM, saving energy at the same time.
