Installing a new liner/skimmer how to question

My son and I replace the liner in my 24' above ground pool today, however we did not cut the hole for the skimmer and return yet.

Can this be done after it is 1/2 full of water? I dont want to waste the water if I will be taking it ou again because we didnt do this step.

I am planning on a plummer doing the reworing of a new skimmer

I am afraid we may have jumped the gun by not putting the linner behind the skimmer plate already.

Any help with this concer will be greatly appreciated
