I'd like an option to disable animated smilies

I know people here love their little animated cartoon things, but I find them highly distracting and annoying.

Back in the olden days, pressing ESC in a browser would cause animations to stop. That doesn't work anymore.

I wonder whether it wouldn't be too hard to add a per-user option to make the animations stop animating.

They are animated gifs. If you use firefox as a browser you can disable them in the advanced config by setting "image.animation_mode" from "normal" to "none".
For it to be managed by the forum, there would have to be a second set of non-animated substitutes served to those who want them, and that gets complex fast.

If it waves at you, animation is still enabled.
