I think the pump died, replacement help

Just started opening for the season. Tried to start pump for first time this season, heard a pop, then a small amount of smoke. Turned off, then on, then off, nothing. The breaker did not trip either. I am not sure how old the system is. I bought the house a few years ago with everything already set up. The information I got off the pump are as follows:

Magnetex and or Century Centurion
3/4 HP Pool and Spa Pump Motor, Permanent Split Capacitor, 115/230V, 56J Frame
  • Item # 5PB79
  • Mfr. Model # B227SE
  • Catalog Page # 25
  • UNSPSC # 26101602
I read another post on here about being more efficient replacing with a 2 speed pump. How do I go about knowing which pump to switch it out for? Please let me know if you need more information.

Welcome to TFP.

Post pics of your pump. With a 3/4 HP pump you are not going to save much in efficiency with a 2 speed pump.

Your motor may be repairable and I would check the Pump Capacitors - Further Reading
