My inground pool (and deck) is about 30 years old and in need of a reno. I was hoping for some suggestions on what is the most cost effective solution to get the deck looking good again and the pool functioning properly. The pool's liner is probably good for a couple of years and I am running a salt system. I am located in Montreal, Canada.
Here are my main issues:
1) The two longest lengths of pool decking have sunk about 1-1.5". There are various cracks in the cement because of this as well as a few hairline cracks. Skimmer and pool lighting plastic are not cracked from the shifting. The cement decking where the main stairs are has barely sunk (maybe 1/4") and the decking where the diving board is has not sunk. I got a quote to have the slabs lifted, but they don't guarantee that it will not sink again, nor can they provide an accurate price on the work as the amount of "backfill" needed to lift the cement is hard to determine. Given about 40% of my deck is solid, I was thinking of buying resurfacing cement and redoing the deck to the right level and then painting it with an outdoor paint. Local supplier recommended TEXNOV for the job. Do you guys see any issues with this approach? I will likely need a few coats of resurfacing cement since the max application is less than what I require. My other idea was to installer pavers over the cement, but it will cause leveling issues with my surrounding walkways, unless I break out the cement deck completely and install the pavers flush to the pool. Also, I think if I resurface the cement, I should add more of the white expansion joints to prevent issues down the road. Is this possible?
2) My main pool stairs have 2 cracks in them. I was told to either a) break my deck and replace stairs and replace pool lineror b) have the stairs professionally refinished with fiberglass resin. Option 2 is much cheaper and is guaranteed 10 yrs. What do you guys think? Has anyone tried doing this themselves?
3) My main drain has never worked (and was capped by previous owner). I believe the line has a leak...I'm guessing this is not an easy repair and will be the same as almost rebuilding my pool? I can live without it, as it's an older Citadelle type pool and I am able to lower the water without it and clean it accordingly.
My return lines are new and overall my pool is functional. I don't want to drop huge amounts of money on it but want to do some work to get it looking good and working better. Main issues I want to tackle are the pool deck and stairs.
