Hayward EcoStar Strainer Cover Kit Question

Does anyone know how to remove the o-ring from the EcoStar strainer cover kit. The clear strainer cover is held in the lock ring by two tabs molded into it that extend slightly over the lock ring. For the life of me I can't figure out how to separate the strainer cover from the lock ring without breaking it. There is no way to remove the o-ring without separating these two parts.

There are two tabs on the clear part that snap in place. You can use a flat head screwdriver to pry the clear part out at a tab.

Note that there is a risk of damaging the lid doing this.
