There was a circular handheld tool. Not sure if it’s a saw or a grinder lol. He came back today though.

Day 13 - Tile on Father’s Day
I was honestly pretty surprised that the tile guy came to work on Sunday; especially since it’s Father’s Day.
He definitely works at a unique pace compared to a typical 9-5! He worked for 4 hours this morning then came back at worked from 5:30pm to 7:45pm.
I’m excited about seeing the coping laid out. We picked Silver Travertine and it’s really pretty in person.

Day 17 - Tile almost finished!
Tile guys put in a lot of work yesterday & today. They finished most of coping & side of spa yesterday and most of the waterline tile today.
The only thing left is the skimmer waterline tile and waterline tile & coping on the spa.
Now that it’s installed, the silver travertine is absolutely beautiful.
We had a last-minute panic over whether the slate white waterline tile would be too plain. We visited one of our neighbors and he reassured my partner that the pool will look good no matter which tile we pick. So he agreed with the original slate white.

Day 18 - Tile is finished!
It looks so good! I’m glad we stuck with the white waterline. I think a more colorful tile would’ve clashed with the spa overflow area.
Tomorrow is cleanup & setting sand. Then they’ll set forms and pour deck concrete early next week.

It looks like they even did a good job in the skimmer opening! I LOVE the spa tile set up. I can't wait to see it with water flowing over it!

Day 19 - Sand
Yesterday my PB dropped off a load of sand and today (Saturday) they’re out here spreading it around.
We are supposed to have forms set up Monday and concrete decking poured Tuesday.
I have questions for all you experienced folks. Next week there’s a 30-40% chance of rain every day.
1. How bad is it if they pour the concrete and then it rains a couple hours later?
2. How long after pouring the equipment pad can they set the equipment?
3. What’s next? I assume equipment & electrical?
4. There’s a funky spot at the base of my bottom step. It looks like a 1” gap in the gunite. How will they fix that?
5. How does the gunite need to be cleaned/prepped before the plaster? There’s a bunch of little debris everywhere.

Answers:
#1 depending on how hard the rain fall is and how soon after the last trawl the rain could be beneficial to the curing process by keeping the concrete hydrated.
#2 Minimum of 24 hours before the equipment is set and secured to the concrete, if you are going to have expansion joints cut into the concrete you also wait 24 hours and it will have to be done with a concrete saw blade because of the hardness in just 24 hours.

Ok on second viewing it’s not as bad as I remembered. It was kinda tough to photograph so I’m not sure if you will be able to see it.
I thought it was a missing divot but it’s actually a lump of extra gunite at the bottom of my last step.

Day 21 - Deck Drains & Forms
Today they set the deck drains and sumps. We already had French drains so they had to add a couple sumps and tie in to the existing drain pipe.
We are on the will-call list for the morning so if the weather holds we will have concrete tomorrow!

Day 22 - Deck Poured
The weather cooperated and our deck is poured! It’s exciting to see how it’s all coming together.
I was worried about how close the pool is to my house when they dug the hole. But with the width of the coping it ended up 6’3” from outer wall of the house to water.
Distance from my covered porch to the water is 18 ft and it’s another 12 ft to our back door.
They’ll have equipment set and the pool cleaned up by the end of the week. If we can get electrical installed next Tuesday then we will have plaster next Tuesday or Wednesday!

BTW - on the ledge. I think everyone has different needs or opinions on these. We don't regret ours for a minute, but we knew why we wanted it. We have dogs and 8 grandchildren. My wife loves to sit on adirondack chairs on it when the water isn't as warm as she would like for swimming. It gets a ton of use at our house. The young grandkids love playing on it. We also point our chairs to the tv to watch an evening movie from it occasionally.

Ditto on the tanning ledge. It is the most used and favorite part of our pool. The kids love it, the dogs love it, and I do the same with the Adirondack chairs. My daughter used to even put the lounge chairs on the ledge and study when she was in high school.
My two regrets on our pool design are: first, when my husband went behind my back and added 6" to the whole pool. I wanted it three feet deep on each end and six feet in the middle knowing this would be perfect for standing on each end tossing a ball or playing other games. 3 1/2 feet is too deep to stand up and hit a ball. The second is that I would like to switch the location of the spa and the tanning ledge. My husband wanted the hot tub closer to the house so you could jump out and run inside when it is cold, but because it is higher than the rest of the pool I see a brick wall rather than the water from inside the house. Looking out on to the tanning ledge with the bubblers would be much nicer. Just my two cents for anyone in the process of designing a pool.
