We decided to do both. I did a sand base (wet and tamped), then put down the gorilla pas (for weeds and nut grass), then we put down 1/2" foam for a smooth bottom. It really came out great.

Is this the kind of foam used in hot tub covers? a hard foam? When I hear foam I think soft, like something used for bench cushions
