Hey yall, so after much debate and looking I picked out a used pool off of facebook on the cheap.. Its a older doughboy 18x38. 4 feet deep. I really needed an oval pool to fit my space in my yard and I wanted a doughboy because I wanted to make a deep end or deep middle and I heard that there was no braces under the doughboy.

So my brother in law spend all day Monday taking it down, and it wound up being just the most fun thing ever! I don't know why everyone doesn't do it! Ok, so sarcasm aside, the plan is to partially bury it and build a deck around it. I'm thinking a sports pool setup, with it being the normal 4 foot at the ends and 5 feet in the middle.

First questions I have on this, can I get away with a standard liner or do I HAVE to have and expandable liner for one foot deep in the middle?
Second question, it came with a 3/4 hp hayward pump and and old style 160# sand filter, should I just plan on upgrading right now?

I'll see If I can figure out how to attach some before pictures.

Thanks in advance!

I hear that from a lot of people! I'll have to give it a try, although I don't know where I;d put it. Most of my back yard is already taken up by a pool.

If the pump runs, it's probably ample for that pool. I'm unsure about how to size sand filters. You can probably get the thing up and running and take your time shopping for the best deal on the pump and filter. Maybe decide you want to hard plumb or add a through-wall skimmer.

Lol, well you can always help one of your friends tear one down just for the experience. its an experience for sure...

I'll see about getting this pump and filter going, I've been looking for a 2 speed pump in the 1.5 hp range on facbook but so far they have all been too far away. It has a through the wall skimmer I think, It actually has cutouts for two skimmers and two returns.

Next thing I need is to get a liner ordered, I've read at least one place online that a liner will stretch if you dig out a foot. Was wondering if anyone had attempted that recently, or what the consensus is. A standard liner is much cheaper than an expandable one. I'm pretty set on having a deep end or a deep middle. Anyone have experience with this?

Your best bet is to try the search box up above. I think expandable might be a specific enough word to find some answers without waiting possibly weeks for anyone to reply who actually has answers.

I’ve been working the old search bar and I haven’t found a whole lot, the one article I did find says 10” is the max added depth for a stock liner so looks like I’ll bite the bullet and get an expandable one. Fingers crossed I’m going to start next weekend 😳

Well it’s been a long few weeks.. I actually wound up finding a 21x41 oval for 309 bucks on Facebook, so I had to sell the other one. Finally got the majority of the work done but it didn’t go down without fighting me every step of the way. Did a semi inground, 2 feet down or so and also a 6' deep end so a lot of dirt had to go. Also you can tell my back yard is pretty crampt.
