Facebook just sent me a recommendation to join a pool group. I checked out a few threads and it seems very active, but OMG! I think I would go nuts in there. They are using pool store testing and everyone is offering crazy advise (often contradicting one another). I'm so glad I found you guys so early in my pool experience.

Ha ha yeah I know what you mean. I follow the below group but it is maddening. I post once in awhile but they are dead set in their mind that chlorine is the enemy of all mankind.

I joined a bunch of above ground pool groups and promptly had to hide them from my feed. I just wanted to scream YOU ARE DOING IT WRONG at almost every single post.

4"- 5" out of level?? oh, you should be fine!

Just take your water to the pool $tore, they will tell you exactly what to do

etc etc etc

And why we do zero social media in our home. Zero. And hopefully I can keep my kids off it as long as possible. Doing good with my daughter. 11 years old. All her friends are on all kinda stuff but she is very very very good about it. I just keep showing her examples of how it’s negative. I really don’t see the positives of it. I know I’m in the minority of the world re Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram but I haven’t seen the positives of it.

Kids are only allowed to use Apple devices and apps (text & FaceTime) with friends I know and always in my presence. When on FaceTime I make it point to pickup the screen and say hi to their friends so they know an adult is listening to every word. No computers or tech allowed in bedrooms or bathrooms. I have Screentime setup on every iPad with maximal parental controls and strict time limits on every app category. I have the usernames and passwords to every account they have. I block certain websites and ports directly at the router level and I have the router set to cutoff specific devices at certain hours.

NO TIK-TOK! Never.
No Facebook
No Instagram
No Snapchat
No Discord
NADA!!!

When they gripe about it I tell them that their devices are a privilege that I pay HUNDREDS of dollars for every month (ISP, Apple accounts, game accounts, etc). And it’s a privilege I will gladly take away if they abuse it or give me grief. Believe me, there’s plenty of other things I’d love to spend that expense money on.

I have to be the frickin computer/web-monkey tech of the family and I don’t even get paid for it …

She should be seeing it herself soon as all of those she knows using platforms get cyber bullied or have all kinds of other drama stirred up. Once she does join in, it will help her want to keep it to school/activities only and not be part of the nonsense

I am quite jealous of this but that ship has sailed for me.

I actually joined Facebook around the beginning in 2003 since I went to UMass and it was being shared around Massachusetts colleges, but now a days, I only use it to contact family members that are distant and I don't see very often. I can't teach them how to use Signal or Whatsapp so Facebook it is.

There's a lot of bad on Facebook. Don't take any advice from anything you see on Facebook.

My daughters were on all those sites and turned out just fine.
So far, so good here too. We just make sure to talk to her about it - what's good, what's bad, what's acceptable behavior, what's not. Someday she'll be out of our bubble, off on her own and needing to interact with all sorts of people and make judgement calls about all sorts of things. Our guidance now is laying the groundwork for how she'll handle things then.

That's a good approach. My daughters had cellphones at 14 and credit cards at 16. As parents, we had the choice of trying to shield them from everything or teach responsible use. Since they would be off to college where we couldn't supervise, we choose to prepare them for that experience.

Exactly! I didn't have those lessons and got in to credit card trouble my first couple years of college. It took a while to dig myself out, and while I figured it out and didn't have to ask for help, it would've been nice not to land myself in that mess in the first place. 🤦🏼‍♀️

Ours just turned 15, and along with the driver's permit, we're taking on a debit card and the Starbucks app. Credit cards will come in a year or two. She wants to go to college in Europe, so we really need to make sure she has good habits and decision making skills set before that (she'll be SO far away!! 😩 ). It's such a different world from when we were that age. (eta: she got her phone at 12, when she started doing after school sports and there was no reliable phone access once the main office staff left).

Good luck to them. My daughters are now 27 and 25. The older one studied abroad for one semester at the National University of Ireland, Galway. The younger one took a school trip to Greece at age 14 without either my wife or I going along. Watching the movie "Taken" was not fun years later. Yes, it's a different world today. They've been to more countries than I have been.
