Whenever I stopped using tablets/pucks, my CYA level was at 80. When water evaps, it gets replaced with my autofill so over time, cya levels should drop right? Is it possible for CYA level to go up instead?
CYA does not evaporate. Water does. The CYA stays in the water in the pool.
Only way for CYA to go up is for you to add it. There are no natural sources of CYA.
CYA will degrade slowly in higher water temperatures and higher than target FC. Here in the desert I see 5-10 ppm per month with water temperatures above 90F.
This is not true if the water you are replacing is lost to evaporation.
This is only true if you physically remove water (splashout, filter cleaning, leak, etc).
When water evaporates, the CYA becomes more concentrated. When more tap water is added, it becomes diluted again. CYA doesn't leave a pool other than splashout/filter cleaning/spillage/UV degradation. Salt is similar it also doesn't evaporate.
