Cartridge filter with Sand Filter?

Reviving a very very old thread. I've already got a 200sqft cartridge and a 2hp pump....thought about putting a sand in front of it to keep the big chunks off the cartridge / extend cleaning times. Thoughts?

Use a sand filter before and a DE filter after.

That way, you get three stage filtration.

DE is so obnoxious to deal with though...

I would not bother with a sand filter.

If you want, go to a 420 or 520 square foot cartridge filter.

If you do everything correctly, you should not have to clean it more than 2 or 3 times per year.

You really don't need a 2 hp pump.

You should have gotten a variable speed pump.

This fix is straight out of Bugtussle but achieves fantastic results. 3 socks in skimmer & 6 Hanes cotton tube sock (3 for each outlet) & Zeosand media. Zeo could not catch the fine dirt/dust & accumulation after a week dictated I vacuum. Installed the above. Sock(s) filthy day 1, clean throughout week. Filth subsided to less than negligible in 1 week.. Now maintaining clarity using CS devise 12 hrs per 7 day week. Take note of pex nozzle pointing 45 deg @ bottom, stirs up fine particulates. No vacuuming, no water wasted & guest have a good laugh.
