We are at about week 3 since starting our in-ground pebble plaster pool. We’ve been reading a lot about maintaining proper levels during the first month, brushing daily, and adding acid and liquid chlorine as needed. Using the Taylor test kit.

From what we understand pH will tend to rise so we’ve had to add acid a few times. I thought TA might rise too, but after 3 days of TA levels ~50 I added a few pounds of baking soda and that brought it up to 80 yesterday.
I’ve also read that calcium hardness is expected to increase in newer pools, and that it’s very hard to reduce CH, so I haven’t taken action yet. But this week, CH levels have been around 150-170. I know recommended levels seem to be 250-350, but should I do anything in these beginning stages to increase CH?

Currently being maintained as a chlorine pool, will move to SWG in 2 weeks

12,000 gallon in ground pebble
Temp 85°
FC 1 (added a gallon of liquid chlorine tonight)
TA 70
pH 7.8 (added 3 cups muriatic acid this morning)
CH 170
CYA 40

Yes, you should increase your CH to 250-300.

What is the pH, TA, CH of your fill water?

TA will only increase with the addition of higher TA water or due to adding chemicals. TA does not increase for the same reasons pH increases.

We’ve had a lot of rain, so haven’t really had to fill it since we started it up. Don’t recall what it was the first day we filled, we had a water truck deliver

Would the rain cause the CH to lower? We’ve had over 6” this month.

Not significantly unless the rain was enough to cause you to drain some water from your pool?

You have an overflow drain on your pool?
