I forgot to post this in the last question, but a few years back the pool store had me install an inline chlorinator, and currently I have chlorine pucks in the chlorinator. Do i need to remove those for this process or at least lower the flow in and out of the chlorinator? Would that be affecting my CYA levels as well?

Multiple drains is best for guaranteed safety of the pool, be it the shell or the liner floating.

But each subsequent drain removes less old water as you pump new water out too, so it can take many tries. You'll get there. Keep at it. :)

Whatever you can vac to waste is less to battle. (y)

Im confused, are you still testing CYA with 50/50 pool to tap water? You stated:
CYA = 80ppm ( I tried the method listed above with 50/50 and the way the directions state and got the same thing. I cant see the dot when I look at 80, can at 90, can at 100.
If this is so, then your CYA is at 160 and need to drain a lot more. Also remember that PH test is invalid above FC 10 or more. If you have 7.5ph then your ph is a lot lower. Wait until the FC drops below 10 and retest PH and post results.

I tried it both ways at that time and go 80 with 50/50 and 80 with the instructions with pool water to the fill line

That is not possible, you are doing something wrong.
Then I guess I don't understand then how i'm doing something wrong, so feel free to educate me. I say that with absolutely no sarcasm here either, I'm here to learn. With the 50/50 method I got 40, then multiplied it by 2 to get 80. Which is why I said 80 both ways. (Maybe I should have shown my math for clarity). When I did the straight pool water I got 80. So if that's incorrect let me know the correct steps. I've checked this so much I've run out of the solution you add with the water. Can you reorder that on the website I purchased the test kit from?

Either way, Ive drained and refilled this pool almost 50% with vacuuming to waste and refilling. My pool is much clearer than it has been in weeks. Someone suggested the Ph would be off due to the high chlorine, but that's my results today. But sadly, I cant get the CYA lower than 60. Today I checked and it was back up to 80.

My CH = 5
PH 7.5
FC 10 ppm
CC = 0
TC = 10ppm
TA 110
CYA (80 today)

Ok, I see where the confusion was. It looked like you were reporting 80 with the dilution method before doubling the result. You are correct, your CYA is 80. Have you removed the tablets from the chlorinator? You may want to do a straight 50% drain and refill to get the CYA down. You can order reagent refills for the CYA test from tftestkits.net

Yes, I removed the tablets from the chlorinator. I guess Ill just need to bite the bullet and drain the pool vs vacuuming to waste and refilling. I was hoping to avoid removing that much water all at once and hoping the refilling gradually with backwashing would work, but looks like it wont.

Thanks

I may be speaking out of school, but I'm not sure I would drain just to lower your CYA to 40 or 50. With a CYA of 80, you'll just need to run higher levels of chlorine. The CYA will degrade over time, and might be at your desired target range by next summer. Or, and I like this one, maybe convert to a salt water pool and add a SWG and keep your CYA at 80.
If you haven't found and read the ABC's, I review this a few times a year so it stays fresh in my mind:

I can say that the TFP method works extremely well with no need for all the lotions & potions the pool stores like to sell.

Exactly, You do not "HAVE" to drain the pool down.. You can just keep you FC a little higher for now and backwash just like you want.. CYA will go down. :)

Just Target FC between 9 and 11 FC daily and do not let FC get below 6..

Right.. but the OP has cloudy water and we are expecting he will have to SLAM... so getting his CYA down to 40-ish will help him SLAM without having to buy all the Chlorine in the state. If everything was hunky dory, living with a CYA of 80 ppm is possible.

Sorry about that team... I thought the SLAM was already done.. @MarlboroMan82 It would be better to SLAM with a lower CYA, 40 would be a great start... That would require you to drain the pool down the fast way.. :)

Thank you, I'm still working on finding a time to drain this and refill. Like I said earlier the backwashing//wasting and refilling isn't cutting it. So when I have a day dedicated to this project ill drain.

What should I try to get my chlorine levels in the meantime to prevent this from getting algae or getting cloudy again until I can drain and refill? I've removed all of the chlorine pucks and will be using liquid chlorine going forward. I think that was part of my problem as any drain and refill i did do was mitigated by having the chlorinator pucks in the water from the prior cleanings, backwashing and refilling.

Thanks again

From poolmath if you dump in 1 gallon a day that will keep it from getting worse.. :)

The CYA chart linked above is what you need, so you should be taking your FC to 11 daily..
