I was thinking of keeping the water just below the skimmer. This past summer I had a leak in the main drain and plugged it off so I can't drain the water any lower than the skimmer. I do not have a pump. Would this be ok, or do I need to go out and buy a pump?

If your summer pump is Off & you want to keep the water below the skimmer, you'll need a pump as you said to acheive that.
My pool pump is ON but I can not pull water below the skimmer. Is there any way of using my pool pump instead of buying a separate pump?
Do you have a manual vacuum that hooks into the skimmer throat? Hook it up and stick teh hose in the pool and pump to waste. Or just use the vacuum hose to siphon off water.
