Good day all,
So I’m finalizing my closing on my pool and upon blowing out my returns got some minuscule debris that came out of the mains. Is this normal? Assuming this debris sat on the bottom of the main drains an weren’t sucked in to make it to the filter?

Forgot to mention I’ve never seen this before in my 14 yrs closing it. I’m thinking maybe since this year I never did a back wash so might not have had that greater suction. My pressure never went far enough for me to have to backwash. Vs previous years backwashing more often not knowing the proper time to do a backwash might’ve left me with more suction in previous years ?

I got a ton of leaves out of my channel drain when winterizing my water features pump yesterday. I would expect some debris normal. Especially if you don't keep the main drain open 100% all the time, not sure if you do. But I've only had a pool for 2 years.

My pools an older Anthony Sylvan pool from the 70s. I have to main drains an two skimmers. I don’t have a way to shut off or reduce the mains.

Since I don't seem to come across too many Anthony pools here (actually yours would be Anthony before they merged with Sylvan if I'm correct being that mine was put in by Anthony. I think the merger came along in the 90s? Uncertain on all that however), do you also have a double plug for the skimmer?

There are these double plugs I’ve found and have had since I bought the house that the previous owner had there I think I used them one or two years in the beginning only and only in the returns. Didn’t understand really what the double plug was for. I also have a lot of old documentation that they also saved from when the pool was installed I’ll have to post some pics. I found a book on the skimmer that showed some sort of skimmer valve that you would put into the skimmer an depending how you turn it that would determine how much flow the skimmer pulls or the main drain pulls but that piece was never left behind when I got the house.

some sort of skimmer valve
Yep...diverter valve. It's threaded on the end and screws into the bottom of the skimmer pot. Works great to control how much suction you want from either the skimmer or drain. Typically, to keep the water free of all bugs and debris - if I have a sufficient enough water level (at least half way on the tiles) I keep it turned to full skim, but in situations where there has been very little rain and I don't want to tap too much water from my well, I'll run the pool with the valve over the halfway point between skim and drain. I've replaced several of those valves cause the threads start to wear out. Then, when vacuuming with a hose (before I just got a vac plate this summer) depending on which way the hose moves, the valve also moves so it makes for rather inconsistent suction.

I suspect this is what you're referring to. This is what I have anyway.

Hey Anthony,
Here’s the vintage manuals and stuff that was left behind. I guess this valve is similar just way older. Looks like there were two. One just to shut the main drains off and the other as a valve control. Also a photo of how the pool is pipped. So I’m always running both skimmers and both bottom drains at 100% because I don’t have any valves and or shut offs at the pump/filter to manage the flows but I’ve been running it as is for 14 yrs now that way. They also left behind the original blue prints. Oh thought I’d share also some pretty old advertisement futuristic for it’s time a cordless phone you can bring out to the pool, lol.
