best practices for removing suction vac?

I usually take our vac out of the pool while swimming, and I've always just closed off the suction line in the plumbing (with the pump on) before removing it. lately though, I've been occasionally getting air stuck in the system while doing so, which has led me to ask (and not really find a clear consensus while searching): what is the optimal way to do this? should I pull the vac and close the line with the pump off instead, or is what I'm doing correct?

You can do both, I use the suction to empty the vac hose by placing the vac on the deck while the pump is running, and wait for the vac hose to fill with air just before the air reaches the end of the hose by the port I pull the hose out of the post and save the system from sucking in air.
