We will be installing a small fiberglass pool. 10x20x4.5
It weighs 450 lbs. I will be doing the work myself, with very limited help. I built our last pool, 18x36x6 vinyl liner, but this is a bit different.
I've been told to use #89 clean limestone for the base and backfill, and that it self compacts enough that no additional compacting is necessary. Also, use it for backfill to fill the stairs void.
Others have said to use #57 and a compactor. Working by myself, the idea of self compacting base for this small pool sounds great.
If you have personally used either of these, I would appreciate the insight and comments. I've eliminated all other options, just need to decide between these 2.

Stairs and ledges can be tricky. They require a good amount of packing and pushing. Even with the best of effort, in some cases you may still notice a slight hollowness underneath or feel a slight flex from the surface, but it should be fine. The Further Reading article Allen posted goes into it a bit more.

Will the 57 be easy to work under the stairs?

Easy is a relative term.

Keep on trying to pack in the gravel even after it feels like you are done. Keep the pool level and slowly add water to settle the pool down.

I’m my experience everything as a base needs compacting before setting anything on it. You don’t have to but i advise on it. At minimum a plate tamper but ideally a jumping jack then a plate tamper and at no more than 6” fills. If you have concrete or pavers around the pool this is even more critical if it was disturbed soil.

My pb blew the stone under my fiberglass ledge and steps with a high powered compressor.
