Balancing PH

Liquid Chlorine
Hi,

So I’ve been testing our pool regularly now for a few months and have regular been adding liquid chlorine according to the CH/CYA chart. Most recently, I’ve noticed a spike in PH and so had gotten some muriatic acid to lower the PH. Since then, it seems like Ph has been a little high every time I’ve test/or when we are planning to use it.

Most recently, I’ve added more acid to lower ph to 7.0-7.2 thinking it’ll be on the lower end after a week of non-use. I tested last night and it’s at 7.8 again. Maybe I’m curious, but what is causing the ph to go back up? Is this something that can be stabilized or maybe I’m just missing the fact that it is something that is maintained regularly like chlorine levels?

My TA was testing high at one point at 130 but i think it’s coming down finally. Do I need to bring it down lower?

finally, it seems like CH/CYA test pretty normal each week. Can I forgo these weekly test since I know where they are at?

Ps. Do I have a concrete pool liner? I have no idea. See pics.

thank you!

You have a plaster pool it appears. A wider shot may help. The water line is rock?

Your pH will rise to 7.8 or a bit higher relatively quickly with a TA of 100 or more. I suspect your fill water you are adding due to evaporation is also higher in TA. So just test pH every few days to a week and lower it to 7.4 or so. It will always rise.

I have a similar TA and my pH wants to sit at 7.8 for quite some time before it goes up to 8. I knock it down to 7.2ish and begin again, I add acid about every 10-14 days. Since I have high TA fill water, I just live with having to regularly add acid.

Looking at your past threads, that is a Pebble Tec type pool finish. So plaster.

That fake rock (I assume) water line will be a mess with calcium scale, etc. I suspect if you own this pool for much longer you will tire of that and when it is time to remodel getting rid of that will on the top of the list.

Those can be done monthly. I see you do not use PoolMath. I recommend it if you wish us to assist on chemistry guidance. Really helps us help you.

Thanks for confirming! Yes, the water line isn’t beautiful with the calcium scale but we will deal with it for now. If you have any tips on maintaining it, please let me know.

Be sure to add liquid chlorine every day during swim season. Letting the FC go below minimum for your CYA can let algae take hold.

What if we don’t use the pool regularly? We seem to use it maybe once every two weeks or less. Can we add liquid chlorine over the recommended CH/CYA chart but under SLAM so we don’t have to add everyday? Is there any pros/cons to doing it this way?

Just like a pet, the pool needs to be fed every day even if you do not play with it.

You can raise the FC up and let it fall if you like. Will use a lot more chlorine. And the potential to go below minimum is high.
