My automatic pool cover won’t close, even though it opened earlier with no problem. We replaced the cover and motor 2 years ago (Pool Cover Specialists Infinity 4000 & Automatic Pool Covers motor). It will surge forward an inch than stop (so it has power). The rope on one side has slightly less tension then the other. My best guess is a broken rope? If so, is that something a novice can fix or it requires a technician? If I’m wrong, other suggestions for how to fix the cover?

I think I have the same cover. Checking for a broken rope is easy, just prop open the vault and look.

Another thing that might cause this symptom is a broken or disconnected optical sensor. Mine has a sensor on each side of the vault. They notice the color change when the cover reaches the end of its travel and cause the motor to stop. They're just small plastic parts so they can break or come loose.

I am fortunate to have a pool cover company which has well-trained employees and which doesn't rip me off, so I call them to fix the cover when needed. They fix in minutes what would take me hours, and it is worth it to me to help keep them in business.

Yes, but I was way off on the problem. Turns out a brief neighborhood power outage earlier that day affected the motor. Just needed to unplug and replug to reset it. ??‍♀️ But I saved your response for when I actually have a broken rope or sensor.
