Alkalinity- how low is too low?

So I have been maintaining 75 customers’ pools for almost a year now and am always battling high ph. Especially with salt cell systems.
One thing I have observed is that when keeping a lower alkalinity (50-70) my ph remains a steady 7.2 - 7.8. In the past this alkalinity would cause me to add 6-9#’s of bi-carb thus raising my ph level to 8.0+.
I would then be adding muriatic acid to lower the ph level likewise lowering the alkalinity levels back down again. It is a constant battle.
Ive noticed several technicians I work with keep their alkalinity levels lower too.
Im curious to a veteran view on this.

Welcome to TFP! Yes, we generally find that the pH remains more stable in salt pools with a lower TA. The link below is our reference for recommended levels based on various factors such as salt, pool surface, etc.

So,,

As long as your pH is somewhat stable, it does not matter how low your TA goes.

At the same time, you want to try and keep your CSI between 0 and -.3

Thanks,

Jim R.
This is my understanding also. After reading several articles online it appeared the alkalinity is mainly just a buffer to help stabilize the ph. If the ph is remaining steady around 7.6, don’t mess with the alkalinity.
Just confirming if this is true.

That's perfect and desirable.

There's the problem. :)

Don't chase TA; it's the least important parameter of water chemistry. Let the TA settle where pH is stable.
