Can I add it all at once?
Yes.

Does it need to be diluted or can I add directly from bottle?
Don't dilute it. Pour directly from the bottle. The more it's handled, the more likely there will be a spill or splash incident. Minimize risk when handling MA.

Slowly pour in front of a return with the pump running so the MA is quickly dispersed. Lower the jug to the water and slowly pour with the bottle opening just above the surface of the water to avoid splashing.

I always put these on when handling MA:
plus yellow rubber gloves. I look like an idiot but I don't care :D

I have to disagree. I always dilute into a 5 gallon jug. Reason being less chance of the acid splashing back onto you or the lanai. Also the vapor can actually stain railings if the wind is blowing that way.
I have scars on both feet from acid back splashing onto me while pouring directly into the pool.

To each his own I guess. At some point you have to handle full strength muriatic acid. I dilute mine into the pool as opposed to diluting it into a bucket first.

I also kneel down and do all of my pouring just a few inches from the surface of the water. Someone above mentioned walking while dumping with diluted muriatic acid. If somebody is walking while dumping full strength, then I would think the odds splashing are considerably higher.

Be safe out there!!

Diluting into a container increases the risk of splashing. It's safest and easiest to pour directly from the bottle into the pool.

Are you pouring from a standing position? That would be dangerous.

Slowly pour MA in front of a return with the pump running. Hold the bottle a couple feet from the coping and ~1" above the water. If you pour in a slow and controlled manner, it doesn't splash. If there were any splashes, they would land in the water. You can partially submerge the bottle and use its buoyancy to assist. Open and close the bottle over the water. When done pouring, you have the option to cap the bottle tightly and dunk in the water to clean off any residual MA that may be on the outside of the bottle.

This is how I pour into a 5 gallon bucket. I fill the bucket half with water and then submerge to bottle inverted into the bucket squeezing the acid into the water.
And yeah I then rinse the empty bottle in the pool so no acid reside stains the pavers or truck bed.

Walking around the perimeter of a pool pouring muriatic is not good advice. It will splash.

Handling the acid more than once is , likewise, not good advice.

Why not simply lay the acid jug on it's side and go directly into the pool from a height of about and inch or two?

(as in the pjt's pics above)

Many, many folks are simply too fearful of acid and their over-precaution leads to accidents,

pjt's good pics demonstrate the correct and safest way to add acid to your pool.

Let me know how that gallon of muriatic acid smells on a dank, humid morning pouring it at arms length right above water level. I bet after the 20th pool you’re going to be wanting to submerge it into a 5 gallon bucket.
Plus your back, knees, and ankles are going to be screaming after weeks of bending over to waters’ height.

Actually, I notice no smell at all since it is so VERY close to the water and my preferred position is downwind. You seem to be aiming your advice to commercial pool companies. TFP advice is most always directed at residental pool owners who don't own 20 pools

I rarely notice any smell when pouring MA. I use the wind to my advantage, or just hold my breath for the 15 seconds it takes to pour the MA.

If I'm going to be crouched for more than ~20 seconds, I'll just sit on the coping.

Are you pouring from a standing position? That's dangerous.

I notice no smell, and here's why: my deep end return side of the pool is out of the ground about two feet, so I'm lucky there, i can just lean over. I go contrary to tfp wisdom and pour FAST (but not enough to splash) and hold my breath while I do it. Also wear chemical resistant gloves and goggles. I have my brush ready to go and brush that stuff like a crazy woman so it can't settle. I got a whiff of it once, and plan to never again!

Yes I am a pool tech.
I treat 20-25 pools daily.
This is the only reason I worry about my back, ankles, and knees. Lol

I would like to buy those gloves. Can you point me to the source? Thanks
