Adding CYA - run pump on high or is low ok?

So we finally got electric (extension cord) to our pump/filter (electrician is coming tomorrow) and added the stabilizer tonight along with another gallon of liquid chlorine (it is basically gone the next day with 0 CYA). My husband diluted 2.5 pounds of stabilizer, dumped it in the skimmer and ran the pump on high 7hrs. I see it is recommended to run the pump 24hrs or until the stuff has fully dissolved. Because he did it the skimmer way I can only assume it is mostly dissolved, as I no longer see granuals in the pump filter. Do I have to run the pump power on high or can I run it on low for the 24hrs? And it looks like I need to wait 4-7days to see the levels on the tests. If I test 24hrs later and the chlorine is 0 again, should I keep dumping in liquid chlorine each day until the CYA shows up on tests? I cannot wait to get the SWG up and running!

Running it on low is fine.

You mentioned not seeing CYA in the filter, so I'm guessing you opened up the filter to look at the cartridges? If you cleaned the cartridges while you had them out, then there's a good chance you would wash out some of the CYA, but if that was many hours after you added the CYA, hopefully it's mostly in the water.

Yes, assume CYA is at the level you targeted. You can test for it in a few days, but assume it's there in terms of managing the FC level. Keep FC around target and never below minimum per the [FC/CYA][/FC/CYA]

Once the particles got small enough to clear the basket they would migrate to the filter, then slowly dissolve. So keep your pump running.
The best way to add CYA is to place it in a sock and hang it in front of the return, squeezing it will speed up the process as it takes forever to dissolve.
I added a pound to my pool yesterday like this in about 3 hours while doing yard work.

Yes we have been adding a gallon of liquid chlorine pretty much every day until we were able to put the stabilizer in yesterday evening. I just did the quick Taylor test and the chlorine is five or more and the pH is still high bright purple at least 8. I read that I should get my water balance before really starting to mess with the salt system so I'm trying to get the stabilizer in and going and the chlorine standard as it's been pretty much zero every night until the stabilizer went in. I'm not sure what to do about the pH. I know I really can't test the cya yet because it just went in last night. Should I work on the cya and chlorine before worrying about pH or should I tackle pH right now as well while I'm waiting for the cya to get where it needs to be?

Does you test kit have a FAS-DPD test or just the OTO (5 drop test)? You should be able to figure out exactly what your level is FAS-DPD test.

If your FC is over 10 you really don't know what your pH is because the test isn't reliable at higher FC levels. Ideally you want pH between 7.2 and 7.8. I use muriatic acid to lower my pH.

Yep, pH is important as well. Add muriatic acid to bring it down to about 7.6

PoolMath is here to help you with the calculation for quantity, and for PoolMath to work properly, you also need to know your total alkalinity (TA) and enter it in PoolMath

When working with muriatic acid, be sure to stay upwind so you don't breathe the fumes, and that there's no chance of splashing any in your eyes. You can find it in the paint section of places like Home Depot. It's also used for cleaning.

ok so I ran all the tests in my kit just to try it all out and here is what I got.

Chlorine Drop Test - 2ppm (went down from last night but CYA only went in Tuesday at 6pm. Added more liquid chlorine)
CC - 1
PH - Still at 8.2 or higher.
CH - 275
TA - 270
CYA - 0? (I could still see the dot with the whole tube filled, although it was much harder to see filled right to the top. Added 24hrs before to skimmer diluted).

So tomorrow I will get the MA to bring down the PH and I am sure I will need to add some more liquid chlorine. Water is crystal clear at the moment. When can I add the salt to get the SWG running? Does everything else need to be balanced first? Regarding the CYA, I added enough for a regular chlorine pool because the SWG is not running yet. Should I aim for the saltwater level or wait until the salt is in and then raise the CYA higher to the recommended levels?

You can add the salt as soon as you're able, and start using the SWG. PoolMath calculates salt as well. Yep, pH sounds like a priority.

I would run CYA at 30-50 ppm for a week or so until you're sure there's no algae. You will run out of that reagent quite quickly, so do wait a few days before testing. With a new fill it's pretty easy to just use the math, then check it after to gain comfort about the number. For example, the 2.5 lbs (40 oz) of stabilizer in 14,000 gals is 21 ppm CYA, which lets us know that you have CYA, but just not enough to read on the test. Adding that much again will be about right, and we can just assume 40 ppm CYA and a target of 5 ppm FC.

I just want to double-check TA. Is that a 25 ml sample? And then each drop of the third reagent = 10 ppm TA?
