Iron in city water?

I have been getting recurrent iron stain last summer, ascorbic acid treatment works but it can get quite expensive. I have an auto fill system and I suspect the iron is coming from the city tap water. I am thinking to install an inline cartridge filter, I can get filter down to 1 micron, will it help to remove metal from the water?

No. It's not the particle size that matters -- iron is an ion about 1000 times smaller than what you can filter. You need a cationic exchange filter -- something that specifically removes heavy metals such as most water softeners (some specifically focus on removing iron).
