Help! Green pool and high CYA levels

To be certain there is no algae in the pool you can Pool School - Perform the Overnight FC Loss Test (OCLT), make sure FC is 10 or higher.

If you pass OCLT
Have less than .5 CC
and water is clear of any algae then no need to SLAM.

Just be sure to keep your chlorine at target level at all times for your CYA, Chlorine CYA Chart. Never let FC drop below minimum or the pool will be unsanitized and algae will grow.

Ok, we will perform the overnight chlorine loss test tonight. If we don't lose chlorine is it ok to leave the CYA as is is and just maintain the FC levels per chart? What about the ph and total alkalinity? Do you suggest using bleach from now on to keep the chlorine levels up?

Ok, had a overnight chlorine loss of 2. We are going to SLAM but looks like we need to adjust our ph first. It is 8.2. We added some muriatic acid and are going to bring it down then start the slam process.

I also notice some rusty spots in the bottom of the pool. Is there anything that we can do about that?

The PH test is not valid when FC is above 10. Let it drop to 9ish and test PH and lower it to 7.2 with muriatic acid. It might take a couple of doses because 8.2 is about the top of the test scale and it could be higher.

Don't need to worry about TA right now, we can work on lowering that after the SLAM.

Yes, definitely need to use bleach or liquid chlorine to chlorinate the pool to avoid raising CYA more.
