how would I know if the pipes are not only screwed to the chlorinator but are they also glued? I don't want to create yet another problem by trying to take this off with a wrench if the pipes need to be cut.

The should not be glued as the installation is just pressure fitting threaded unions, but builders and homeowners do some odd things to install or fix problems so it could be anything. You won't know until you try to unscrew the unions.
