I'm new to this and while preparing to SLAM my pool, I'm confused. My test kit only reads to 5 for chlorine. How do I know when I have reached the shock level of 28?

You need a specific kit for doing SLAM. If you truly need to do it, the TF100 is the best value for sure. What's going on with the pool needing a SLAM done on it?

Patrick got it, order a TF100 and at least include the XL option. That will give you what you need while you are clearing the pool, and probably enough reagents for a couple of years normal use.
The only other real option for a test kit is a Taylor K-2006. Be careful comparing prices because the K-2006 comes in sizes, designated by a letter. The basic K-2006 has .75oz bottles. Yo need to get the K-2006-C to get the larger bottles that you want. Even then it is a little short on the reagent & powder for the FAS/DPD test.
I also have the SpeedStir and Sample Sizer. They speed testing and accuracy.

Here's what's up: NO CHLORINE! None. Zip. No matter what. Yellow(?) algae. 2 yr old plaster, in ground pool, approx 15000 gallons. Leslie's water analysis report says CYA is 70, TA is 90, pH is 7.6. The test kit I do have agrees with those numbers including no chlorine! I am ready to rumble with my pool

Leslies test can not be trusted, when you get a good test kit you will see the differance..
Order a test kit today, you need a good one to SLAM and take control of your pool... TFTestkits.net Almost everyone will recomend the TF100 with the xl option, it will also make tests much easier with the speed stir but its not required...

pool store test results are not accurate and you cannot fix your pool based on them. Critical to starting is knowing your real CYA level.
I had three pool stores test my water and give me results of CYA. results? 0, 0, and 100. actual CYA? 30
they cant test for CYA and 95% of pool store employess have no idea the relationship between the level of stabilizer (CYA) and chlorine sanitizing power. we do. its in an easy to read table

Ok, I'll order a new test kit. What can I do in the meantime? It seems the pool looks worse by the hour. Can I add bleach or ???? to keep it from getting worse?

how big is your pool? based on size, you can add 1 to 2 gallons of bleach per day. the test comes from north Carolina. if you order it today, bet you have it on monday

1 gal a day will be fine until you get your test kit, that should be about 6fc.. untill we know exactly how much CYA you have its hard to say add more..
Ok. Test kit ordered and 1 gallon of bleach in pool. I brushed til my hands hurt today
Have you scooped out all leaves and debris with a leaf rake? That will speed up the slam and use less chlorine.
Yes, the pool is free of debris. I am already excited because the pool does NOT look worse than it looked yesterday. In fact, after brushing and adding the one gallon of bleach, it actually looks better than it did yesterday. I will be ready to attack after my new test kit is delivered. Be ready, people, I will need your help! So glad I found y'all

I have put 1 gal of bleach in the pool daily, since our last posts. I did NOT put one in today. The pool looks much better but there is still a bit of (I think) algae in some of the rougher spots of plaster, corners, etc. So what is my next order of business? SLAM? Please lead me........

Yep, algae likes hiding in the rough spots. And behind lights, in cleaners, under ladders.
Lower PH a tad to 7.2. 70 CYA is a little high for a SLAM, but manageable. Just takes more chlorine to get to shock level.
Here is the process, http://www.troublefreepool.com/content/125-slam-shock-level-and-maintain-shockingl. Don't skip any steps. You are off to a good start. The first few days it is better if you can test FC and add chlorine every 2-3 hours to see how well your pool will hold chlorine. Some pools with lots of organic material burn through chlorine rapidly at first, like 8-10 ppm per hour. Once you are holding chlorine level pretty well then 2-3 times per day of testing and bringing FC back to shock level will suffice.
