HELP!!!
Just got a house with a concrete in ground pool about 50,000lt. After a few dasy the water started to have a green tint so we took a sample to the pool and spa specialist in town. They instructed to put 8kg of Sodium Bicarbonate, after an hour 570gr of Ph increaser, after another hour 3 kg of power chlorine and then after another hour 1kg of copper based algey killer. Brush pool filter for 24 hrs and then stop filter for 24 for dead alguie to settle and vacume. We followed instructions and today when we started vacuming realized that the color of the pool walls and bottom got from white to gray.
I would suspect that something with the PH is wrong but no idea. Will get another sample of water to pool specialist tomorrow but not confident they are competent to help after what happened.
Anyone any idea why the color of the pool paint could change and get darker? Is that serious damage? Will we need to repaint?

all help appreciated

cheers

Welcome to TFP!

We need to see a full set of current water test results to be able to know what is happening. It is very important to know what your PH is right now, and a complete solution to your problem requires knowing all of the other numbers as well.

What they suggested doesn't sound right, but depending on your water test numbers there are some unusual situations where it could possibly have made sense.

As I general rule, I suggest staying away from copper based algaecides. They tend to cause problems in the long run.

Thanks heaps for trying to help,
went to the pool specialists today and looks like it is the copper algae killer that has stained the pool - I guess we got the wrong brand. Now we got some stain remover but to be honest the pool looks worst that before. The stain remover removed the stain only in the places that it had direct contact :? at least before it was equally stained :(
At least I know is isonly cosmetic damage which I'll have to live with till we repaint the pool one day
thanks for all you advise

Grey staining from copper based algaecides is one of the big drawbacks to using them, and is one of the reasons we really do not recommend them. I suspect you added it while the chlorine levels were still at shock value and the pH was very high. This is an almost sure fire recipe for staining! You could have cleared the algae just using chlorine and not had the problem. I suggest you go to our pool school section of the forum and start learning how to properly care for your pool. The link is in my signature. Read the whole thing at least twice. Also, I strongly suggest you invest in a good test kit (info about test kits is in Pool
School) and start testing your own water. It will save you a LOT of money and headaches in the long run!

Getting bad information from pool stores is not uncommon. Remember, they are in the business of selling you chemicals and now you have staining to deal with instead of just algae problems so you had to buy more chemicals from them.
We call this getting "pool stored"! It happens to just about every pool owner until they decide to learn how to care for their pools properly using the methods that professionals use (which is what we teach in this forum!)

Welcome to the forum. Don't worry about the stains right now. They can be fixed down the line. First order of business is getting your pool under control and learning how to care for it! Once you get the hang of that we can help you with the staining.

Thanks a lot,
very sensible to learn to take care of you own pool. Will get stared with the pool school :-D and use this form when I get stuck.
By the way after 24hrs the staining is almost gone :)

cheers

It can come back since you now have copper in your water. IF your pH spikes (particularly when you shock) you might find the stains return. Your best insurance right now is to keep a maintenance dose of metal sequesterant in the water. You will probably have to reapply the sequesterant every 2 to 4 weeks.

You might also consider the Pro Team Metal Magic, which can cause the sequested metal to be removed as a crystaline in the filter.

Even though Proteam claims that Metal Magic will remove the sequestered metal as a crystal in their marketing literature it is just another HEDP based seqesterant, like most of the metal sequesterants on the market and this does not really happen in the vast majority of cases. It is just a marketing claim. Any HEDP based seqesterant can cause metal phosphonates to precipitate out of solution but the metal that usualy precipitates is calcium. This is why seqesterant can cause a temporary clouding of the water. I am very familiar with Proteam products and Metal Magic is one of my favorite sequesterants. (We are a Proteam dealer.) Don't believe everything that the manufacturers tell you. Much of it is wrong! Another case in point is Chemtura's repeated claim that CYA levels up to 200 ppm have no adverse effects! (Chemtura is the parent company of Bioguard, Guardex, Sun, Omni, AquaChem, and Pooltime among other brands.) We all know this to be untrue! Take marketing claim for what they are worth!

Good advice, and noted. I'll not be challenging Don G to his face, but....
