Have some questions on items being sold as part of winter kits....I've read posts on this forum where people just shock, also some add algaecide. Am curious what these things are suppose to do??? Seems there are items being added, anyone know the contents and logic behind what the kits are pedaling?

1. What is the winter pill?

2. What is the "Floating Slow-Dissolving Winter Oxidizer" releasing?

3. Why do they come with "metal out" products? Are they trying to sequest the copper that was just put in with the Algaecide?

All I can find on the winter pill is "a natural enzyme product", which doesn't tell us much. I would avoid putting anything in your pool that you don't both understand and actually need. This fails on both counts.

A slow dissolving oxidizer releases a chemical which breaks down organics, much as chlorine or MPS would. It would help fight algae. A properly closed pool shouldn't need this, though it can help reduce the chances of getting algae.

Metal Out is a sequestrant. It keeps metals from depositing on the pool surface. This is only useful if you know you have metals in your water. The PH can vary over the winter, which can cause metals to deposit as stains. Adding some extra sequestrant can help minimize this problem.
