Check valves, Before the pump, and after the pump?

Put a shutoff valve above the pump they sell them with unions built in and it can be located closer to the filter so if you need to remove the selector valve or pump for maintenance you have a union there.
Check valves in the suction can make life easy and cause issues when debris gets stuck in them, it will also prevent you from priming the suction line when opening the system
If you only ever plan on running your pump manually put the same type of ball shutoff with union upstream and open it before turning on your pump, close it when you shut it off - you'll never lose prime this way
