I have a 1hp Hayward super pump and the rear seal is leaking. I went to my local Leslies store, where I bought the pump 5 years ago, and got a new rear seal and a gasket kit. Replacing the seal was pretty simple, but it still leaks. I sanded any rust off the shaft before I installed the new seal and used gloves to handle the parts. I did not use any type of lubricant or sealer on the new seals. Is there something I am missing?

All I can think of is that the seal was installed backwards. Seals are usually designed so the pressure against them forces them tighter against the shaft.
OK, took the pump apart again this morning and after looking over the new seals very closely, I found that the carbon seal on the spring was split. Took it back to Leslies and got a new one. No more leaking
