Helping a friend out and pump just broke

I helped a friend open his pool about 2 weeks ago. Algae was present upon opening the pool. Either the pool was not closed properly or the safety mesh cover allowed too much sunlight in. We SLAMMED the pool and finally it seemed that we were all done.

The testing this evening reflected FC of 5 and CC of 2. A bit strange as the last week's testing was showing the CC was .5, and water was clear. It is possible the testing was done incorrectly, but I doubt it. And yes, we are using the TF - 100 test kit.

It appears that the pump impeller broke this evening. With these levels, algae may be back sooner than later. He was able to take the pump off and now it is getting darker. It could take a few more days before the pump is replaced as the plumbing is not exactly user friendly, making it easy to replace the pump.

Question: What should we do next given these circumstances? Can we dilute liquid chlorine in buckets and broadcast all around the pool without the filter running? Should a cover be placed back on the pool? Should there be an algaecide used for the next few days?

This could take a week before the pump issue is resolved. Thank you.

Yes you should continue to add bleach, use a brush to thoroughly mix it in.
Yes a cover could help keep the FC around and block the sun.
You could use some Poly 60 as insurance if the FC drops too low.
