New from MN!

We just purchased our house fall before last ....

Many, many years ago some friends had their pool turn horribly green and they did just about everything to clear it up. Sounds like you. Well, somewhere along the line someone told them it was iron in the water. They went to some store and bought some kind of "magnetic" chemical that took the iron out of the pool via filtration. It was great after that, and too much wasted money. Hope your issue has been solved by now. But, I just wanted to throw this in.

In this case the pool did not have iron problems, but that is fairly common in pools filled with well water. Iron oxidizes when exposed to chlorine and turns the water brown. The oxidized iron can be filtered out over time, but most pool owners don't want to swim in brown nasty water! The chemical you wrote about is not magnetic, but it is a sequestrant which keeps the metal particles in suspension so they do not stain the surface of the pool or discolor the water. Sequestrant levels must be maintained to keep the metals in suspension. The long term solution is to drain and refill with metal free water.
