Lots of dirt in pool

Not sure if this is in the right forum...

A few days ago, I noticed a bit of dirt on the bottom of the pool. No big deal. But this morning when I checked the pool, I noticed tons. We've not had any rain or wind to speak of so I'm not sure where it could have come from. Could this be a problem with the filter?

FWIW, our dirt is a fine red clay.

48 hours of filtering and not a dent has been made in the amount of dirt in the pool. Ive had to backwash several times, so apparently the filter is catching some of it. What should I do?

btw- turns out my *14* yo threw a clod of dirt in the pool. *14*!

post a pic. If it looks like a big egg, it is a sand filter.
