Pump Overheating and Low Pressure

Hey Everyone,

I'm pretty new to the pool scene. My history is a little complex, I'll explain that at the bottom, for now here is my problem. My pool pump motor was replaced about a month ago and we are finally starting to see some progress (we can see the bottom of the shallow end) but today my pump started shutting off every 2 to 3 minutes, it will start up again after about 5 minutes. I have also notice that once it is running the pressure on the filter is about 5 psi it is usually around 15 psi. I checked the intakes basket on the side and it is clean. I have a bottom drain (which I can't see) but I was able to shut off the flow from the bottom incase there was a blockage but again that did nothing. When the pump is running the output seems pretty strong. It is about 78 degrees here but the pump is way to hot to touch. I had to use a towl when I took it apart to check the impeller for debris. There was some small stuff but nothing drastic and once I cleaned the impeller the problem still continued. Any thoughts on what my issue could be?

I am running C48L2N134C1 motor with a pentair cartridge filter, the vinyl pool is about 36,000 gallons.

Quick History
We bought this place in July of 2013, the previous owner would not get the pool up and running fully during the purchase he said he hadn't used it in 2 years but everything is fine. We had a pool inspection during the purchasing process (May of 2013), the previous owner turned the pool equipment on while the inspector was there, the inspector said everything looked good and we just need to clean up the water. 2 months later after we close I took of the cover off and fired up the system. The filter broke immediately so I replaced it with a new pentair cartridge filter. The pool never cleared up the first year even with the pool stores help. I vacuumed a ton of gunk from the pool the first year. I gave up and winterized the pool in October of 2013. The next spring I started again this time I was able to get the pool to the point where I could see the bottom of the shallow end by mid June, then I went away for the weekend and came back to green soup. I never got the pool right the rest of the year, the pool store said my CYA was to high so they had me drain half of the pool and refill it. Still that did not fix the pool and I was forced to winterize it early in 2014 because I was going away for work. This year when I opened the pool the motor would not start, so I had to replace it. The motor was replace 4/27 and has been running great all month. I have CYA testing in a good range 30-40 compared to last year's 100+ range, the shallow end can be seen but we still have never seen the bottom of the deep end. Now today, the motor started overheating. I am getting pretty frustrated with the whole thing, any help would be greatly appreciated. I will take videos or pictures, just let me know what you need! Take pictures of everything so it's easier to visualize what you have. My first guess would be a clogged up impeller, but you already ruled that out. Was the motor replaced with the same hp as the previous one?

If your pressure is 5 psi and 15 is normal, you do not have normal flow....assuming your psi gauge is working.

Have you checked your entire intake line for any blockage....... skimmer to pump?

As you can see I can turn off either the bottom or side intake or leave them both open, no matter what configuration I use the pressure never climbs. The jets in the pool still seem to be putting out a decent pressure and the circulation of the water seems to be the same as always. The pump ran for about 25 minutes today before the thermal switch shut it down. Someone asked if the shaft moved freely and yes it seemed to move easily the noise level is pretty quiet as well. As for the new pump itself it is the same model as the last one.

Here's my plan, and no offense if I've over simplified too much:

Either the pump pushes water as rated or it doesn't. Then it runs into resistance in your filter. Then in the filter housing you measure pressure with a gauge. It should read high if the filter is clogged, and given that your pool is dirty I'd suspect rapid clogging.

I suspect that possibly your filter is clogging up quickly due to the condition of your pool. So clean it again, and see if you get good pressure for a few minutes. If you do and it gradually rises, then it is clogging. We're assuming your gauge is good. They are ~$20 if you don't tell them it's for a pool. ;)

If your pretty sure it's neither of these, then I'd check the valves on your skimmer and main drain - I notice the handles have been removed. Make sure they are both "open".

As a last resort remove the coupling where the water leaves the pump and goes to the filter. I'd expect a robust flow. For priming purposes you might have to do it with the pump running, so do be careful - you have electrical, water pressure, and possible debris.

You might be able to put your hand over it and hold back 5 PSI, but not much above that.

What is that black thing to the right of the filter housing?

Who installed the pump? It's a 115/230 volt. Could something be wired incorrectly? Could the impeller be installed backwards? Or not installed correctly?

Thanks for the reply, I am getting very little pressure. I made sure both intakes are open. I even blew the lines out to make sure they were open. I removed the coupling where the water leaves the pump. Here is the video of the geyser I get. https://youtu.be/UzPwAOz-U0s The video doesn't show me capping it with my hand but the pressure was decent, I couldn't completely cap it. The Black thing next to the filter is my chlorinator. If you notice there is a white valve after that which when partially closed increases the pressure on the gauge. I installed the pump it is at 230 volt which was the factory setting and it ran for a month 24/7 until it recently started overheating and there is barely any pressure. I took a second video https://youtu.be/g7E9wD5t0iE showing the gauge while the pump is running. The only thing I can think of is that there is a blockage between the pump discharge and the filter but I can't get the end connected to the filter off.
