Pump and Filter Recommendations

Are there any brands to stay away from? I've read that I should oversize the filter and get a variable or two-stage pump. I’m planning a 15,000 gallon pool for my SW Florida home.

I'm leading towards a cartridge filter but I don't know which brand, size, model, etc... Same for the pump.

Welcome to the forum.

We seldom prefer one brand over another with filters and pumps. They are quite similar in performance and price.

More important is the sizing. For a 15K pool a 1 HP pump is just about right. Take a look at the 2-speeds (HP) as they will pay you back rather quickly. VS pumps have lot's of nice features and most people who have them love them but they probably aren't the best investment.

Get the biggest filter you can afford. It makes everything better. If you go with sand, a 24" dia. or 30 " diameter would not be too big.
