Question on CYA/Bleach level

This has always sort of confused me...

My CYA is at 40. Target chlorine level for that CYA reading is 5.

So when I am done adding my bleach - what should my chlorine level be?

I should shoot for MORE than 5 no? Or do I just try and get to a level where when I do my next test it's not below the minimum for that CYA reading?

Ummmmmmm.....5? You may have to go higher than 5 depending how much FC your pool loses on an average day. Normal FC loss is between 2 and 4.

Minimum is 3, Target is 5. Shoot for 5. The next day, if you're at 3 or above, shoot for 5 again. If you consistently come up below 3, say 2, then you'll want to target 6, so the next day you never drop below 3.

The Target is just a ballpark estimate. The minimum is absolute. Every pool is slightly different. Adjust your target so you never drop below minimum and you're golden, no matter if that target is 4, 5, 6, or 7. If you're losing more than 4 FC per day and you can't blame it on a massive swim party, something else is going on.
