1st results with SWG running

Hi.

Looking to get feedback and where/what to add first. SWG has 3100 PPM and I have been running it manually until I get it integrated with the pump for around 5 hrs at a level of 45%. So I appreciate any input.

FC - 5
CC - 0
TA - 100
CYA - 30

Hi Amanda,
you didnt list the pH.

As for the other readings, you may want to bump up your CYA to 40-50, but thats all you need to do.
TA will take care of itself.

Here is the Water Balance for a SWCG pool

The two most important things are to keep the chlorine level above the minimum level for your CYA so algae doesn't grow, Chlorine CYA Chart, and to keep your ph between 7.2 and 7.8.

Ok so I am going to buy some borax later and add. Ph is a little low when I do the phenol test. Not sure how much I should buy but I will start with a few boxes and add 1 and test.

In efforts to raise CYA - Can I use this?'

Before I found this great place, like many others I have amassed many chemicals in my shed. To that end I am in need of raising my cya and I have these blue pucks that I got from the pool store last year and they are supposed to be for stabilization. Do you think I can put them in a sock in my skimmer? Or do they have a shelf life. If not any feedback on brand or where to purchase products?

Depends what's in those "blue" pucks. If they are trichlor pucks, save them for vacation and weekends away this summer. Read label carefully! Easier and quicker just to get some plain old stabilizer from Walmart which is pure, granulated, and dissolves easily in a skimmer in a sock or pantyhose.

To add to what woodyp said, if they have any metal at all listed on the ingredients, do not use them. They'll lead to staining, green hair etc. If there is any mention of copper, silver... don't use them. Try to return unopened containers for store credit if they do contain metals, maybe get yourself some muriatic acid or liquid pool shock/bleach in exchange. Open containers, you're best bet is to donate/drop them off at nearby HHW (household hazardous waste) drop off site, if they contain metals.

If they do not contain metals, you can use them to add CYA intentionally or during vacation.

Well seeing I am going to walmart for borax I can pick up stabilizer also but I will check to see if I still hve the info on the pucks.

Walmart was out believe it or not. So, it is supposed to rain here tomorrow - will aeration from the rain really raise PH?

Why do you want to add borax? To raise the pH or add borates?

I just merged 3 of your threads related to water chemistry.

Yep to raise PH. After closer inspection those pucks are stabilizing pucks - after the rain subsides and I backwash I will add in a sock and run pump for 24 hrs. How many pucks will bring the CYA up?

You should not put the trichlor tablets in a sock ... that advice is for pure stabilizer.

You can use the Effects of adding Chemicals section of PoolMath to calculate what they will do in your pool.

Ok well these blue pucks are intended for stabilization. But I think I need to wait until the rain passes and see what the numbers look like. I struggle with Pool Math actually

What are the ingredients. All trichlor pucks have stabilizer in them. I am going to guess the blue ones have extra junk added, like maybe copper.

the label doesn't give the ingredients. Probably because it was made in china. Here is a pic.

I can not find any reliable information about what that is ... so, I would avoid it.

Thanks. I just bought a 16 mil solar cover from in the swim so I am going to buy some stabilizer and other stuff from them since they gave a decent coupon. Appreciate the help.

So the stabilizer came in and it says I should broadcast it over the pool. Didn't I read that its best to use a sock in front of the return after backwashing? I just want to do this right and get the level up.

Put it in a sock and place the sock in the skimmer (or hang in front of a return jet ... make sure it does not lay against the side of the pool).

Yep I see it on pool school. Will add and run. So after 24 hrs should I test again?
