filter covering question

I am curious to know when to cover my sand filter. I closed my pool down 1 week ago and was told to open the drain and top of sand filter to allow it to drain. I did that and now I am wondering when is it ok to cover it? If I tip the filter to the side alittle bit of water drains but the sand seems really dry, I have put my hand all the way thru it.

Is it safe to cover and not fear freezing and cracking of the filter?

A week should be plenty of time to drain. As long as you close it up/cover it so no water can get in the filter will be fine through the winter.
