Going to Paint pool this year not sure how to tell if concrete or gunite?

We are in the process of preparing our pool to paint this year. We have had lots of little toes get rubbed red and raw from the bottom. We are wondering if how to tell if it is concrete or gunite? And if anyone has any experience with different painting products out there.

Concrete/gunite/shotcrete are basically the same thing. That is the pools structure which should then be covered by a plaster product.

We do not recommend painting as at best it only lasts 2-3 years ... and it is not going to make the pool much smoother.
