Opened my pool last Friday April 24 and knew it was going to be bad so no surprise really. However, never had algae this bad nor climbing the walls all the way to water line. Since I couldn't see the bottom of deep end, I didn't know what was down there. Scooped out LOTS of debris: leaves, pine straw, worms, dead salamander, and gunk. Scooping and brushing was an ongoing process, at least 5/day. Even in the rain. Filter required backwashing at least 2x/day. Ran it 24/7.

Initially, I just maintained chlorine. I did add quart of polyquat 60 on day 2. I went through 8 gal of 12% liquid shock total in 4 days!. Which was curious that it took that much and wouldn't hold at all. However, after pool began to clear I took a CYA reading - ZERO!!! And I closed to 40-50 CYA. So again, I lost CYA over winter dumping and algae bloom. I've always lost CYA but never all of it.

By day 4 I had hope. Clearing nicely. Decided at this point to get some granular dichlor at Leslie's to kill 2 birds with one stone: chlorine and CYA. Since I could pretty much see the bottom I threw in my aquabot. 2 hours later the filter bag required cleaning. Kept running it, and cleaned filter bag every 2 hrs. Tedious but effective. Worked on balancing chems at this point. Everything was good except ALK - 40, added 16 lbs of baking soda over 2 days. ALK now 100.

Day 8 (Friday 5/2) was a glorious day! Woke up to a nearly crystal clear pool. Some "dusty spots" in a few areas and will require shock level until CC are zero. My metals fell out of suspension and will need 1/2 - 1 LB of ascorbic acid but that is not high on my list. That can wait.

Never in my wildest dreams did I think this swamp could get cleaned in 8 days. But, it can be done. This is proof. Confession: As a newbie, there is no way I could have accomplished this. Thanks to this forum I have learned EVERYTHING about maintaining my pool. Thanks to all the mods!!!

Todays numbers:
pH: 7.2
CL: 4
CC: 0.5
ALK: 100
CH: 120
CYA: 10

Hi Ivyleager, You've given me hope. I'm retired and have inherited the pool "duties" from the boss. She always took care of it before and is watching me closely  Looking at your pics we have almost identical pools. We had a new liner and winter cover put in last summer. (got 14yrs out of the originals). Anyway every spring here in Missouri our pool looks like yours when we take the cover off. I have added chlorine twice and am running SWG in super chlor mode. Since I've join this site I realize I need to get the TF-100 as my test only registers up to 10 ppm FC. I have been leary of adding to much chlorine for fear of hurting new liner. (that's what the boss is worried about, actually) The green is gone and I think the bottom is pretty clean, but can't actually see it yet through the blue or aqua haze. It is day 5 and has not progressed much since yesterday. I guess keep throwing chlorine at it and hope ?

FC - above 10
PH - between 7.4 - 7.6
TA - 110
CYA - 80 - 100
Salt - 3600

Yes, keep hitting the chlorine. However, don't the mods generally recommend to use liquid chlorine during the SLAM to save the SWG? Not sure if it is still in vogue. I've been away for a while and to my surprise, shocking was changed to slamming.

It does take a few days for the haze to clear. Maintain the chlorine level and "all will be fine." Good luck.

You must have read my mind. Looking around the forums and using the pool math, I was wondering if "Clorox" wouldn't be the better way to go. Seems like it would mix better and quicker. I get tired of sloshing the powder around in a bucket till it dissolves. Am anxious to get test kit to find out how much of my "high" chlorine level is actually usable chlorine. Right now I feel like I am shooting in the dark. even though we have a couple of buckets of powdered & puck chlorine left (we switched to SWG last summer when the new liner was put in) I am off to store to buy some jugs of bleach. Oh, and just between us don't tell the boss I joined this site, she thinks I'm coming up with this all by my self :D
