How Long will a test kit last?

I bought a K-2006 test kit in May 2012 and used it to take care of my parents pool until mid summer 2013. The kit has been in their garage for 2 summers with little use. Dad said he added chlorine today, so I decided to test the FC level. Test came back clear, no change in water color. How long will the test chemicals last? Also he has drained the pool twice over the past two years and I am sure their is no CYA in it. I have not tested for CYA.

Under ideal conditions (cool, dark, non-freezing) a test kit can last two or three years. If it is stored in a hot location the lifetime will be much shorter.

Without any CYA in the water you will lose all of your chlorine to sunlight over the course of several hours each day.
