help choosing replacement pump

We have an OLD pump. PAC-FAB, possibly original to the 1993 construction of the pool. 1.5 HP 230v refurbished motor that was put in 4 years ago shortly after we became first-time home and pool owners. Pipes measure 2.5" OD and the equipment sits on level with the pool about 12' from the skimmer. We have 3 returns. In the last few weeks the pump/motor has been making a ton of noise and we really just want a new one in there. Preferably inexpensive, but not bottom of the barrel either. We have a friend who has installed one before willing to help us (he's an electrician with the water company) but we are unsure of what to buy as a replacement. Don't think we need anything drastically different, it has done the job nicely running about 4 hours a day and sometimes not at all! :D A two speed might save us some energy during the winter months when the freeze control kicks in overnight (maybe 10-15 times a year).

Here is a link to my first post that includes photos of our set up. http://www.troublefreepool.com/threads/54944-chemistry-amp-how-to-replace-water?p=463745#post463745

Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Just about to purchase a Pentair WhisperFlo. Maybe this is a dumb question, but since it is a dual speed pump will we need to put in a new controller (timer)? Our current one is just on/off.

Thanks for the input!

Most people use a standard on/off timer, and then have a manual switch to change speed. You can run on low speed nearly all the time, and then manually go to high speed to backwash/clean the filter and for manual vacuuming.
