Bad valve seal? Water draining inadvertently.

Disclaimer: have only owned a pool for about four months

Our pool has been filtering just fine and as far as I can tell, nothing else has changed. However, now when the filter comes on, the water level starts to drop rapidly and we have water coming out in front of the house (guessing main drain?). The handle is still set to the "filter" position. Any ideas or advice is really appreciated.

Did you turn the backwash handle to lock in in filter mode? Can you provide pictures of your setup?

It sounds like a bad spider gasket in the multiport or a bad O-ring in the backwash valve. Take a look at the pictures in the Visual Encyclopedia and let us know what sort of equipment you have. Otherwise it's all just guessing.
