This was dumb and I knew it was dumb when I did it. I removed the sand screen while draining the sand filter. I knew it was stupid when I did it but I did it anyways. I will have to replace the screen plug because it is damaged from when realized what I started. Is there a way to insert a new one without removing all the sand?

Filters are not all the same. What model and make is yours and are you saying their is a screen mounted inside the filter at the drain plug?
