Backwashing Frequency

Every time I vacuum on filter I have to backwash when I'm done. Is this normal? I have completely rebuilt the filter. New sand, multiport, laterals and shaft. Not sure if this is normal or not.

My normal pressure is around 12 and can jump up to over 20. It isnt a whole lot of gunk either. Mostly some sand and dirt. A few small pieces of leaves and some beatles and spiders. Maybe a small toad or two

Needing to backwash after vacuuming is common enough. You would be able to go longer between cleanings with a larger filter.

So I guess the 300lb hayward filter is too small for the pool?

There are different measures of what is "too small". Your filter is a little above the minimum size, but well below the ideal size. For a pool that size I would use a 600 lb sand filter.

When it comes to filter size, I say go with the biggest one you can afford. The biggest advantage is less frequent backwash/cleaning that you have to do.
